Request for your help, for info about Long Island Sound locations

THE QUESTION:
Are there any areas in Long Island Sound which are especially good for birds (and/or fish) which we would like to identify, perhaps to prioritize / protect in some ways?  Can you help us identify one or more of these good LIS areas for birds?

THE REQUEST:
Please send us one or more good location names, to the email address below.

THE DETAILS:

This project is trying to identify the Best Locations in LIS (Long Island Sound) for Birds (and Fish, marine mammals, and any other life forms).

Can you help us with your knowledge of Long Island Sound (LIS) ?

We are building a catalog of the best LOCATIONS in LIS for birds, fish and other life forms…. with an eye toward identifying, conserving and protecting these best locations (possibly against some natural disasters or unanticipated future uses which might damage these waters and their ecosystem in various ways, or simply displace the birds from their feeding/resting areas).

This can include ANY area in LIS (along and within the GREEN perimeter in the map below), from the shoreline to far offshore, from the western end (near Manhattan) to the eastern end (touching Rhode Island) of LIS, from the CT side to the NY side (the Long Island, NY side). This includes large bays and areas right along the shoreline, plus all waters offshore in LIS. This includes 1,320 square miles of water surface. We will exclude inland locations.

We are defining "LIS" to be the area inside the green perimeter, on both the CT & NY sides, including all waters, from the shore out to the middle of the Sound, between the two states.  Thanks to Lisa Wahle for this map.

For each location, please send us (to this email address:  robben99@gmail.com,  or by postal mail) the following four main items:

1)   LOCATION: Name of the location(s) and a description of WHERE it is (they are), including the nearest town.  This can be all in words, or you can also attach a marked-up map. Up to you.

2)   YOUR NAME (and your email address), and let us know if you want your name on the published list, or kept off the published list (and on the Team list of contributors/partners).

3)   COMMENTS (optional):  any other points you would like to make, possibly including why you think this is a good area for birds and other wildlife.

4)   BIRDS (plus fish & other life forms) you have seen there, approximately, possibly including this year, maybe this month (perhaps during the CBC count period of Dec.14 thru Jan.5). We are interested in all bird species in these areas, although we are especially interested in Bonaparte's Gulls, Long-tailed Ducks, and Horned Grebes, plus any other species which you think have been changing over the years (plus Razorbills and any other alcids).

Feel free to send us info on one or multiple locations (or a list of them, as text or spreadsheet).
Here are two examples:

LOCATION:  Waters around Faulkner Island and nearby Goose Rocks, 5 miles off the coast of Guilford & Branford CT.
OBSERVER:  John Doe (johndoe1234@hotmail.com).  You can mention my name on your catalog.
COMMENTS:  I have visited this area for ten years and you can contact me for additional information if you want.
BIRDS:  In winter this is a top-rated location for birds, where we have seen typical LIS waterfowl including up to 50 Common Eider and 100 Long-tailed Duck in the waters, plus shorebirds, such as Black-bellied Plover, Sanderling and up to 50 Purple Sandpiper, on the rocks and around the perimeter of the island.

Here is a second example:

LOCATION:  Waters SE of City Island, Bronx, NY.
OBSERVER:  Jane Doe (janedoe1234@hotmail.com).  You can mention my name on your catalog.
COMMENTSA number of species that might be thought of as deep water species may show up here, including Gannet, Great Cormorant, both loons, Common Goldeneye, and rarely Razorbill. Seals too.
BIRDS:  On the 2016 Bronx-Westchester CBC  we had 1,200 Surf Scoters counted in these waters.

And do not hesitate to tell us about locations which others may also report to us. We will aggregate and merge all this information appropriately. Note that we already have a rough working draft list of some of these locations and that all this will be combined properly in early 2017.

If you know of any LIS areas which the birds, fish and/or marine mammals favor, please share your knowledge with us. Thank you!

Seasons Greetings,
